Two players from the Long Beach State men’s water polo team—Dan Matulis and Nolan McConnell—have been chosen for the 14-man USA Men’s Senior National Team roster that will begin international water polo competition this week at the Volvo Cup in Hungary.
The Volvo Cup is the first competition in 2014 for Team USA, which begins a busy year. The United States qualified for the FINA World Cup, which will be held in Kazakhstan this summer.
Matulis is one of four first-time selections on Coach Dejan Udovicic’s Team USA roster. The senior center redshirted during the 2013 season for Long Beach State but returns to action on the international stage and will look to retain the form that saw him score a team-high 69 goals in 2012 while earning All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) honors.
McConnell also earns a promotion to the USA senior national team. The junior attacker previously earned a trip to Hungary last summer competing with the USA Junior National Team in the Junior World Cup last August. McConnell scored 45 goals for the 49ers during his 2013 sophomore campaign. He was also a 2012 All-MPSF honorable-mention selection.
Competition for Team USA begins on Friday, Feb. 7, when the United States opens against Serbia. The U.S. team will then play Germany on Saturday, Feb. 8, before closing out the tournament against the host team, Hungary, on Sunday, Feb. 9.
