Long Beach State’s track and field teams had six student-athletes receive 2013 All-Academic recognition, and both the men’s and women’s squads were named All-Academic Teams by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
On the men’s side, the 49ers combined for a 3.12 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and was the only Big West Conference men's team to be selected as an All-Academic Team. The 49er women had a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 to claim their ninth-straight All-Academic Team honor.
Individually, Gabe Hilbert and Matt Maldonado both took home their second-straight USTFCCCA All-Academic awards. Hilbert was the Big West Conference champion in the 800 meters as he clocked in with a lifetime-best 1:48.99 seconds. That mark ranks fourth in school history. Hilbert went on to advance to the 800m quarterfinals at the NCAA West Preliminaries.
Maldonado finished the indoor season ranked 57th in the nation in the mile (4:01.62). He currently holds the indoor school record in the mile (3:59.08) and ranks second in outdoor school history in the 1500 meters (3:44.28).
Garrett Demirjian and Michael Vaughan were also USTFCCCA All-Academic selections. Demirjian was an All-Big West performer in the decathlon as he was the runner-up at the conference meet. Vaughan was a conference scorer in the triple jump and also qualified for the NCAA West Preliminaries. He finished the year ranked 22nd in the nation with a personal-record 51 feet, 7.25 inches.
Emily Cooper and Meghan Foley represented the Long Beach State women on the USTFCCCA All-Academic list. Cooper advanced to the 200-meter quarterfinals at the NCAA West Prelims and earned All-Big West honors as a member of the third-place 4x400 relay squad that established a school-record 3:41.24. She also scored in both the 100 meter and 200 meter races at the conference meet.
Foley was an NCAA regional qualifier in the 1500 meters, advancing to the quarterfinals of the West Prelims. She registered a school-record 4:23.55 at the Steve Scott Invitational and also ranks third in program history in the 800 meters(2:08.84).
To qualify for individual USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked among the top 96 nationally in an individual event or ranked in the top 48 in a relay event; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
