Long Beach State women's water polo player Christina Kotsia is in Barcelona, Spain, this week competing in the FINA World Championships (July 21-Aug. 2) as a member of the Greek Women’s Senior National Team.
Greece opened up pool play against the United States, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist, on Sunday, July 21. The team will also take on Great Britain this week and conclude pool play with Canada.
The senior women's team is coming off a second-place finish at the Dutch Water Polo Trophy Tournament after falling to the United States 11-7 on the final day of competition.
As a true freshman, Kotsia was second on the 49er squad in scoring with 50 goals. The Athens, Greece, native was also solid in penalty shots for the 49ers converting 12-of-15 opportunities. She also led the team in scoring 11 times while owning a team high 17-game scoring streak.
Following her freshman season, Kotsia earned All-America honorable mention honors from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches and All-Big West Conference honorable mention accolades.
Kotsia will add to her international resume two weeks after the world championships as she competes in her home country of Greece at the 10th FINA World Women's Junior Water Polo Championships with the junior national team. The women of Greece look to improve on their sixth-place finish in 2011.
Greece opens up the junior tournament on Aug. 18, but the team’s first opponent has yet to be confirmed. The Greeks will kick off day two with Spain and finish Group A pool play against Canada.
