The Long Beach State men's golf team recorded a 289 in Tuesday's final round of the Folino Invitational to capture the team title for the second year in a row at the Industry Hills Golf Club.
Sitting in second place after Monday's second round, the 49ers overcame a six-shot lead by tournament leader UC Irvine as they finished with a 54-hole total of 8-over par 872. The Anteaters finished four shots behind the 49ers at 12-over. Loyola Marymount placed third at 31-over, while tournament host Cal State Fullerton (+33) finished in fourth and Sacramento State (+42) in fifth.
This is the first tournament victory this year for the 49er men since winning the Anteater Invitational last season. The squad collected a program record five tournament wins last season.
Freshman Daniel Chian led the way for the 49ers, tying for fourth overall individually by shooting a final round 75 to finish with an even-216.
Chian started the morning on the par-5 No. 10 where he would par the first two holes to stay even. The Covina native would go 2-over after bogeying Nos. 12 and 13 and par the next three holes. Chian collected his first birdie of the day on the 17th to finish the back nine at 1-over. After making the turn to the front, Chian recorded two consecutive birdies on Nos. 1 and 2 and par the remaining holes for a bogey-free front nine.
Senior Raymond Ho carded another 75 to tie for sixth individually at 3-over 219 while freshman Kevin Lee shot a 73 to tie for 10th at 1-over. Senior Philip Chian tied for 12th after carding a 76 to finish at 6-over and sophomore JJ Holen (+11) recorded his best round of the tournament with a 2-under 70 to tie for 17th.
Travis Russell of UC Irvine won individual medalist honors on the third hole after going into a three-way playoff with Tyler Torano of Loyola Marymount and Ryan Williams of Sacramento State.
The men's golf team returns to action this week as it hosts the 17th Del Walker Intercollegiate Golf Classic, Feb. 25-26, at Virginia Country Club in Long Beach.
